Menstruation as Rites of Passage

In old times rites of passage , initiations were important parts of social life. They were marking special moments in life - coming from childhood to adulthood, getting married, entering wider states of mind - shamanic initiation.

As all life is a proces in movement, our Dear Planet is in movement and whole Universe around, it is imporant to realize, mark and celebrate changes we experience.

Looking at definition made by Arnol van Gennep rites of passage are built from three stages (number three is very common in many sacred practises and symbolism)  separation, transition, and reincorporation.
That means they we go through
*death for our community, tribe - we become invisible , enter other sides, other worlds, different realms, we can loose/ leave behind our current name, identity, and the way people knew us so far, also the way we knew ourselves, detachement, cutting away
*transition- space between , when we left what we knew, thought, believed, we left the world we knew and entered the new space but still didn't reach the final stage
*completion and return to community-  we return as new, with new name or new abilities, new vision and insights and can be welcomed by community with a ritual, ceremony . Community embraces us as new or if not in any group, we share with friends and beloved ones our new identity and gifts created during our rite of passage. We can mark it with a help of object, art creation etc.

Some time ago my friend and spirit Sister Kim shared with me a video, which I find very important and valuable and so would like to share on this temple blog.

Jasmin Starchild who hold Red Tent (place to honor womenhood and feminity) talks about menstruation as rites of passage.

I also feel and think that menstruation itself is rite of passage too. It is time when we enter a different state of mind, different realm and can experience menstruation as a inner journey and go through stages of passages.

We live in special times when old, ancient knowledge and wisdom returns to our current times.

Thanks to Jasmin for sharing with us.
